Vitamin K for newborn babies
Newborn babies naturally have low levels of vitamin K. This is normal. Only a small amount of vitamin K passes through the placenta, and babies do not build up their own supply before birth. Babies also do not have enough gut bacteria to make vitamin K themselves until they are about 3 months old.
Vitamin K is very important because it helps prevent serious bleeding, especially in the brain. In the Netherlands, about 2.1 out of 100,000 babies get bleeding caused by low vitamin K.
Here is how vitamin K is given to newborns in the Netherlands:
Pasgeboren baby’s hebben van nature weinig vitamine K. Dat is heel normaal. Tijdens de zwangerschap gaat er maar een klein beetje vitamine K via de placenta naar de baby, en baby’s bouwen zelf geen voorraad op. Ook maken ze pas rond de leeftijd van 3 maanden genoeg vitamine K aan met behulp van hun darmbacteriën. Vitamine K is belangrijk omdat het helpt om ernstige bloedingen te voorkomen, vooral in de hersenen. In Nederland komt een vitamine‑K‑tekort met bloedingen gelukkig weinig voor: ongeveer 2,1 op de 100.000 baby’s.
Dutch policy (vitamin K drops)Zo geven we vitamine K in Nederland (vitamine K‑druppels)
- Direct na de geboorte: De verloskundige geeft 1 mg vitamine K als druppels in het mondje van de baby (alleen met toestemming van de ouders).
- Right after birth: The midwife gives 1 mg of vitamin K as drops in the baby’s mouth (only with the parents’ permission).
After that: Babies who are breastfed get 150 micrograms of vitamin K every day, starting one week after birth until they are 3 months old. These are also drops given in the mouth.Daarna: Baby’s die borstvoeding krijgen, krijgen elke dag 150 microgram vitamine K, vanaf één week na de geboorte tot ze 3 maanden oud zijn. Dit zijn ook druppels in het mondje.
What does the Health Council say?
The Health Council advised giving one injection of vitamin K in the baby’s muscle, because this may protect best against bleeding.
However, our professional organisation (KNOV) currently advises not to give vitamin K injections. The Ministry of Health (VWS) follows this advice.
