Are you looking for supportive and professional midwives in Utrecht? The Dutch healthcare system can be hard to navigate when you’re pregnant. Choosing a midwifery practice is one of the first steps. We, the midwives of Breedstraat in Utrecht, want to offer you as parents-to-be the care you need. Together we prepare for the upcoming birth of your child. In this article we tell you more about our practice and what to expect.
A personal approach
At Verloskundigenpraktijk Breedstraat we offer full obstetric care for pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. We care for women living in Utrecht and surrounding neighbourhoods. From the moment you have a positive test, we guide you through the whole process.
Many pregnant women appreciate the option of an early ultrasound (vitality ultrasound). Our assistants will ask you if you want an early ultrasound. Unless there is a medical indication, this early (internal) ultrasound is not covered by your health insurance. The cost of the scan is € 56,77 (2026).
Should you wish to have the early ultrasound, we plan this around week 8 of your pregnancy. Otherwise we will schedule your intake appointment and dating ultrasound around 10-12 weeks.
During the intake appointment we discuss your health, previous pregnancies, lifestyle and any questions or concerns you may have. Our goal is to make sure you feel supported and well informed from the very beginning.
Pregnancy care with our midwives in Utrecht
Throughout your pregnancy, our we schedule regular check-ups with one of the midwives to monitor both your health and your baby’s development. During these visits, we:
- Check your baby’s growth and heartbeat
- Monitor your blood pressure and wellbeing
- Discuss symptoms or concerns
- Give advise on nutrition, lifestyle and exercise
- Discuss your birth preferences and wishes
The checkups will take approximately 15 minutes. It’s nice and useful when your partner can join during (a few) of the consultations.
Centering Pregnancy
You can also choose Centering Pregnancy. This involves attending pregnancy checkups with a group of pregnant women who have roughly the same due date. The meetings last two hours each, allowing for much more time to discuss topics.
Birth support from midwives in Utrecht
When your labour start, we guide you through this process. If there aren’t any complications during your pregnancy or birth you can opt to give birth at home or in the hospital, we’ll support you in either setting. We want you to feel safe and supported and we’ll focus on creating a calm environment.
Postnatal care from your midwives in Utrecht
After your baby is born, we’ll continue to take care of you for the first six weeks. The first weeks with a newborn can be intense, both physically and mentally. During the first week our midwives will visit or contact you 3-4 times to perform the necessary checks. We will also discuss the birth with you, attempt to solve any issues with breastfeeding and answer any other questions.
Six weeks after birth we can schedule a follow-up consultation with the midwife to discuss the postpartum period.
