English speaking midwife

If you are pregnant and living in the Netherlands, you can register with a midwife practice. If you do not speak Dutch, it can be reassuring to find an English speaking midwife nearby. At the Breedstraat midwifery practice, all the midwives and assistants you will meet speak fluent English. You will get to know several English speaking midwives who work at the practice throughout your pregnancy.

Importance

At Verloskundigenpraktijk Breedstraat we understand the importance of clear communication during pregnancy and birth, especially for those who may not be fluent in Dutch. That’s why we offer the services of our English speaking midwives to support you throughout your pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

How to register for an English speaking midwife

If you have a positive pregnancy test, you can use this website to make an appointment at the practice in the centre of Utrecht. The assistant, who also speaks English, will contact you to arrange a first ultrasound and an appointment at the practice. The first ultrasound scan can take place around the 7th or 8th week of pregnancy. If you don’t want this scan, you will have a scan between 10 and 12 weeks to find out your due date. Your English speaking midwife will explain a lot about your pregnancy and the rest of your care at your first appointment, also between 10 and 12 weeks.

Follow-up appointments

During your pregnancy you will have a number of antenatal appointments with different English speaking midwives. These appointments will always include taking your blood pressure and having a scan of your abdomen to make sure your uterus is growing well. We will listen to the baby’s heartbeat using a fetal monitor. The English speaking midwife will give you the information you need at this stage of your pregnancy and answer any questions you may have.

Delivery and postnatal care at an English speaking midwife

As soon as you are in labour, you will call the telephone number of the practice and speak to an English-speaking midwife. Together you will decide on a plan for the next few hours. You can choose to give birth at home or in hospital under the supervision of an English-speaking midwife. If anything goes different than planned, the English-speaking midwife will explain the next steps. We will guide you through the whole process. If everything went well and there was no medical intervention during labour, you will go home a few hours after the birth. At home, you will receive help and care from the maternity nurse (called a Kraamzorg). The English-speaking midwife from the Breedstraat will visit you a few times during the first week. You can always call the practice and the English speaking midwife questions throughout the first week.
